User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0
Build ID: 20130227063501

Steps to reproduce:

Hi All, I am facing an issue and it seems it might be related to what has been discussed above, I have kind of skimmed through it as its too much in detail lol.

I had upgraded the ff18 to Ver 19 a few days ago and came across this issue/ bug. I have again upgraded again to the beta ver20 as well and it still persists.

Whenever I try to download something in the private browsing mode.

Actual results:

none of the downloads (download progress) are shown in the download window (CTRL+J) I.e. things like 'the % downloaded' and the 'speed' etc even though I know the download is taking place. This was very useful in the old versions of FF.

In addition I also noticed that If I exit FF and reopen in normal mode, the download will show up there so kind of negates the purpose of the private browsing mode.

Any suggestions other than going back to ver18?

I have also tried disabling all the addons as well.

Expected results:

The download window should show the file download progress in the download window (CTRL+J)

The Downloads Manager has changed a lot since Firefox 18 and the downloads window (the old Download Manager) is not available anymore in Firefox 20. But still you should see the progress of a download in the downloads panel or in the downloads view in the Library window.

You mentioned that you disabled all your add-ons, do you have any other custom settings set? Please try to reproduce the issue on a clean profile and let us know the results:

Thanks!

Simon, thanks for your reply. I will try the new profile thing. The issue is that the download panel for Private window does not work.

I can confirm this same behavior, but ONLY in Fx 20 on 3 Win7 rigs (2 x64, 1 x86).
Download window confirmed to work/display normally in 19.0.2.
>>>Bugzilla newbie here, so please bear with me if I do not report 100% correctly.<<<

In Fx 19.0.2 with "permanent" PB, the "old" download window correctly displayed the active file download, % progress, etc..
After updating to 20.0 -- without making any changes to any system -- the "old" download window is now empty/blank during active file download.

Steps to reproduce:
1) In 19.0.2 with "permanent" PB, navigate to http://www.kaspersky.com/internet-security-latest-versions (or site of your choosing) & download the large test file -- download window displays the active download properly.
2) D/l & save Fx 20.0 installer from www.mozilla.org.
3) Close Fx.
4) Run Firefox 20.0 setup file and install Fx.
5) Open Fx & confirm permanent PB setting is retained.
6) Visit same website as before & confirm that the "NEW" download button/panel works correctly, showing active file download.
7) Navigate to about:config & toggle browser.download.useToolkitUI to true.
8) Close Fx & reopen Fx.
9) Visit the same site to download & save the same test file.

Expected result: "Old" download window opens and properly displays the active file download (as it did in 19.0.2).

Observed result: "Old" download window opens, but it is blank/empty, even though the file **is** downloading.

Additional troubleshooting steps performed:
1) A brand new, "naked" Fx 20.0 profile (with PB off by default) works properly.
2) Existing, normal Fx 20.0 profile in Mozilla safe mode: abnormal behavior still occurs, as long as PB is enabled.
3) Repeat the entire sequence described above on the other 2 Win7 systems: exactly the same results on all 3 rigs.

Step that also resolves the issue (aside from creating a brand new, naked profile with no changes to preferences, no extensions, etc): disabling permanent PB.
With my standard profile and existing preferences, turning off permanent PB fixes the problem.

Please let me know if you need additional info (e.g. security programs (same on all 3 rigs), extensions, plug-ins, screen shots, etc).

Thanks very, very much for your time, effort and patience.
Sorry, I forgot this:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0
why do you need to toggle browser.download.useToolkitUI to true? That pref won't be supported forever, you should start using the new download manager.

Btw, I'd like to know if comment 0 is also referring to the old download manager.
RM, I can confirm that the in progress downloads are not showed in the old Download Manager if Permanent Private browsing is enabled. Please keep in mind that the in progress downloads are displayed in the about:downloads tab that substitutes the old Download Manager while in private browsing.

Please also see Bug 845403.

Thanks, Simona B:

If I understand correctly, because of the changes to PB, the DL manager and other features, this bug in the "old" download window may not be fixed because support for the old feature/component is being dropped?

As such, I need to learn to use the "new" download panel, it seems?

At least, 1) I wasn't "crazy" when I observed this on all of my rigs, 2) the problem is not with my computers, and 3) I got a bit of practice submitting to bugzilla.

Thanks to all for your prompt and expert replies.
we are happy to improve the new manager if you find things that could be improved, the old manager is maintained with very low priority as of now.
So this may be fixed, but we can't give an ETA.
Still does not work on FireFox 23, "userAgent": "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:23.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/23.0",
}

Steps to reproduce:

Open private browsing windows, start download any file or just save image
Results: No download progress displayed, downloads window is empty both during the download and afterwards, however, windows 7 taskbar still shows download status - and it is the only place to track download

Expected results:
Download window/history in private browsing windows is populated until that window/session is closed
Looks like an old issue given FX20 and up are affected.Need input if this is not the correct assumption .

Given the info so far,not something we would block a release on, but will consider a low risk uplift if found.

Alexander, can you also try https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=861564#c7 , in the interim as a workaround to see if that helps ?
bajaj, i have read thru that bug, but it really does not help. i have "Remember history" set there
There's no additional input given as to why this would need to be tracked for FF26 release, if you have STR using FF26 and the new Download Manager please add more info to this bug to help QA verify.
No longer valid.

* Bug 747422 — the downloads window was replaced with the downloads panel in Firefox 20.
* Bug 928349 — the browser.download.useToolkitUI preference to re-enable the window was removed in Firefox 26.
