Bug 841495 is adding code that will generate tab thumbnails by loading sites in a background window with cookies disabled. This will let us enable thumbnails for pages where we currently disable them for privacy/security reasons. We should make use of this code in Metro Firefox once it lands.

When trying to use BackgroundPageThumbs in metro with OMTC enabled an null reference was happening at https://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/gfx/layers/composite/AsyncCompositionManager.cpp#51 As discussed with Jimm on IRC, BackgroundPageThumbs uses a hidden window which is not fully implemented in metro yet. See http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/widget/windows/winrt/MetroWidget.cpp#220
