853593 - Logging in with persona requires extra step

Steps to reproduce:

Went to MDN, clicked "Sign in" at top right.


Actual results:

Persona sign in window opened and I picked the email address I wanted to auth with. When I was done, I ended up at an MDN page that insisted I enter a username before it would complete the sign in.


Expected results:

I don't want to create a new account at MDN, that's one of the things that Persona is supposed to simplify, right?  If MDN has to do something behind the scenes for new users, that should be invisible to me.

Hey Dan. Thanks for explaining your frustration with this.

You mention that you do not want to create a new account on MDN. Do you already have one?

Assuming you do not have an account on MDN, this is expected behavior. The username you chose after logging in serves a different purpose than your email address. The email address is used for verification, the username is for communicating your identity to others. For example, I log in with my email address but a different username (John Karahalis) is listed on my profile page and any pages I edit.

I don't have an account already (that I know of).

I'd prefer at that point if the page said something like: You don't appear to have an account on MDN already. You'll be identified on MDN as "[e-mail]" by default, but if you prefer, you can fill in this field with some other identifier that you prefer, like your name: |_____________|  [button]

Thanks for sharing the idea. Exposing email addresses could complicate privacy and lead to our users being spammed, which is perhaps why so few sites do it today. Bugzilla is a notable exception, but the same problems exist.

I am going to mark this particular proposal as WONTFIX. I understand your point, and we can consider making login easier in the more distant future (especially if Persona add a username auto-suggestion feature), but as things stand now we are happy with the behavior.
