In bug 835883 I added an 'auto' value to the -moz-orient property and made that its initial value. This was to allow <input type=range> to auto orient based on its width-to-height ratio when -moz-orient is not specified (previously its initial value was 'horizontal', which would have prevented that). If we're not going to do that auto orient thing, then we should possibly back out that patch (unless we thing it might be useful to have that as the default for some future reason).
Before backing out bug 835883, we should wait for this whatwg discussion to take its course:
