Details

For over a week, Firefox Sync has been unable to complete sync. The log shows: 1364479412180 Sync.Engine.Bookmarks WARN Got exception "Component returned failure code: 0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE) [nsINavBookmarksService.getItemType] Stack trace: _buildGUIDMap()@resource://services-sync/engines/bookmarks.js:233 < _syncStart/<()@resource://services-sync/engines/bookmarks.js:357 < _mapDupe()@resource://services-sync/engines/bookmarks.js:313 < _findDupe()@resource://services-sync/engines/bookmarks.js:413 < _reconcile()@resource://services-sync/engines.js:1121 < SyncEngine.prototype._processIncoming/newitems.recordHandler()@resource://services-sync/engines.js:904 < resource://services-sync/record.js:625 < Channel_onDataAvail()@resource://services-sync/resource.js:542 < <file:unknown>" building GUID map. Your bookmark database is probably corrupt, with roots missing. This should be impossible after Bug 791562 landed in fx20. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cant-add-change-or-save-bookmarks?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Bookmarks+not+saved#w_create-a-new-bookmarks-file

I deleted disconnect Sync, quit Firefox, deleted places.sqlite, restarted Firefox and re-paired Sync. Yet, history shows only stuff loaded on this computer after restarting Firefox. Older history from other devices is not downloaded. Why?

Yet, history shows only stuff loaded on this > computer after restarting Firefox. Older history from other devices is not > downloaded. Why? Ordinarily, you would use Reset Sync to make sure you have everything from the server. It's hard to tell what you did, but try that.
FWIW, of the "what to sync" checkboxes, every one except "Bookmarks" on all my devices had become unchecked spontaneously (i.e. I hadn't unchecked them). Resetting Sync and manually re-checking the boxes helped, but it's not cool that the boxes had unchecked themselves.
