User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:23.0) Gecko/20130408 Firefox/23.0 Build ID: 20130408030928 Steps to reproduce: Tried to load dailymail.co.uk Actual results: Browser took a long time to fully load the site Expected results: Should have loaded much faster. This is on a Galaxy Tab 2 running today's Cyanogenmod 10.1 nightly. Using FX 20 on a clean profile. Tried several times an it's always very slow. Stock browser works fine and loads significantly faster.
Loads rather quickly here on residential WiFi, tested with Nightly (04/15). When you say 'took a long time to fully load', how long are you seeing?
I would say c. 10-15 seconds. Is there anything else I could change / try?

Do you see the slowness only on this site, or other sites as well? Also, you said this is on a clean profile - is this the first site that you are loading after Firefox starts? If so, is it still slow if you load a couple of other sites first?

Hi, It's slow regardless of whether it's the first site loaded on not. I've now tried it on my Galaxy Note and on my unscientific measurements it takes roughly 38 seconds for the site to load. On the AOSP browser it takes 8-10 seconds.

On the AOSP browser it takes > 8-10 seconds. Is it the same website they are sending to your stock browser? On mine I get a tailored minimal mobile website, in Firefox I get a desktop website which is loading plenty of more content.
OK interesting. On Nightly on my phone I get the desktop version, so not sure why you get served the mobile version. In any case: if you switch your user agent to Desktop how long does it take to load? Significantly longer than stock?
This is also true of Firefox on Mac. FF 20 or 21, but I have seen this for at least a year. For instance: 1) Open a tab on a random page 2) Open second tab and select dailymail from the navigation bar. 3) click at once on first tab Expect- immediate switch to first tab, Find- 5 seconds where the browser does not react. Happens- always. Essentially the browser blocks to any action for about 5 second after starting to load the front page. Mac, Intel core 2 duo, 3GHz, 4Gb memory. Probably one of the very top pages in the UK.
This is definitely a site-issue; see the remote web-console loading dailymail.co.uk and the slow timeline for a variety of pictures. If you look at the entire network-request window, there's dozens of slow loading pictures that are the majority of the load here.

Moving over to Tech Evangelism; this needs outreach to them to serve a mobile optimized site to Fennec.

Summary: dailymail.co.uk very, very slow to load. Stock works fine. → Dailymail.co.uk should serve Fennec a mobile optimized site
I see the same desktop content in Firefox, Chrome and Android Stock. The site takes a noticeable amount of time to load in all three browsers. I didn't measure the difference to determine if Firefox is taking significantly longer than the others on my device. TBH, unless this site has a mobile version, I suggest that someone let them know about the issue but I don't think it's worth spending too much time on this from a Mozilla tech evangelism perspective. Contact e-mail is - technical@dailymailonline.co.uk Aaron - Can you confirm that there is a mobile site by attaching a screenshot of the mobile site?
Yeah I don't get a mobile site at all in any browser including my iPhone.
Given that dailymail.co.uk does not have a mobile site to serve, I'm resolving as won't fix. I put the contact e-mail for the site in comment 10 if anyone wants to pass along a report about slow load on mobile devices.

All, can someone please do some measurements just to confirm what I and others are seeing, i.e. that Firefox (Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Note and Mac) takes significantly longer to load than stock / chromium? I am relaxed about 1-2 seconds, but honestly it takes so long on my tablet and phone that the screen actually dims and turns off and the site has still not completed loading. Stock is very fast. If this is due to the side code "optimising" for webkit, then we should be more specific and tell the site admin. As a more general point there are several sites that are broken with Firefox mobile but I'm restricting reporting to only the most popular ones so we cover the largest number of users. As AM said above dailymail.co.uk is massively popular (along with say BBC's iplayer: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775919) so we should push site admins to fix these. Just my 2c...
I think comment 13 is a reasonable request. Aaron - Can you take some measurements to confirm the problem? If this site does load consistently slower in Firefox it would be good to understand if the issue is with a site specific code path or a limitation in our platform.

Patrick, can this be profiled? Is this bug dependant on other Android networking works in progress?

aaron, did you confirm an issue? and have reason to think its a networking issue? Can you point me at the data - it will help greatly.

Hi, has there been any movement on this? I've tried again with the latest Nightly and it's still slow vs. the AOKP browser.
cc dougt to bring this issue to his attention.

No. As mentioned, since the user is reporting slower loads on the desktop site between stock and fennec, can this be investigated? I'm unable to reproduce, the same desktop site loads slow for me in Chrome and Firefox (I don't have access to stock) do the large volume of pictures and scripting going on.

aaron, if you are unable to reproduce, why are you asking the networking team to investigate something? I want to fix things, but give me some STRs please! Aaron, "Can you take some measurements to confirm the problem?" Or mark this bugs as WFM.

A quick test on a Nexus 4 for me showed Firefox Nightly painting much before Chrome. Chrome stayed blank for a few seconds.
Closing this. They both now load in about the same time.
