Details

We support a "simplified" version of OpenSearch dubbed "MozSearch", so that our shipped search engines were a little less complicated to author. We currently serialize engines to disk in this simplified "MozSearch" format when we're installing engines from the web. Since those are basically always in OpenSearch to begin with, we should avoid converting them to some custom format and serialize them to the profile as OpenSearch.
The proposal in bug 1203167 is to store the user-installed engines in a JSON file.
