If I were to guess, they are probably using embedded h264 content. If that's true, then it's expected you'll get the error you are seeing in 1.01. You shouldn't get that error in 1.1, however.

If my theory is correct that this is embedded h264 content, then this is likely an evangelism bug.
Yup, confirmed. This is definitely embedded h264 content.

Note that this isn't an app-specific issue - you can reproduce this on m.accuweather.com easily.

I'm confused by this comment. A site can embed h.264 content. AFAIK, the limitation is not with the site but with our platform. What exactly are we going to ask of the site here? To implement a code path specific for Firefox OS? If so, that's not a very standard or scalable solution.

The issue is specific to FF OS, but solving this problem should be able to be done through feature detection. Isn't there a way to do feature detection to figure out if you can play the media content for a certain MIME type?

Chris - Do you know? Doesn't CanPlayType do this on a HTMLMediaElement?

OK. That makes sense. I had read your comment as a suggesting that we fix the video by getting the video to play - say by using a Firefox OS specific intent. I'm still not convinced the fixing a site's fallbacks or error detection is a good use of our time as there are bigger fish to fry.

Here's a very timely post by Christian Heilmann about HTML5 multimedia fallbacks:

Yes, the issue is the browser pre 1.1 can't play H.264 videos. Only privileged apps can.

The exception in this case is the fact that this is a preinstalled app on device as well, so anyone who buys a FF OS device will likely hit this issue. The quality requirements for these particular apps has been high, so we've been less tolerant of failing to show videos, even. But yeah, I don't think this is high priority to our compat team - this should be handled by the app review guys.

I'm going to bounce this over to Gaia again treating this now as a partner app bug, since this is not important to the compat team right now.

WebM or Ogv videos should play fine on those devices (depending on size and quality). I don't know the details of the accweather videos in that regard.

Accuweather has disabled videos in their app for FFOS. Waiting for h.264 support to be enabled.

@Lisa- Can you confirm that videos are no longer being presented to the user?
Thomas - Do you know if videos are selectively disabled via feature detection or more permanently disabled? In the latter case, we should suggest feature detection so that Accuweather continues to function as expected on Firefox OS v1.0.1 devices after v1.1 is released.
Attached image video still shown with error β€”
Fix not verified, I still see a section under "News and Videos" that contains videos.

Did a fresh install of the app, so nothing should have been cached on my side. Thomas, are you sure the fix has been deployed?
Flags: needinfo?(telin)
I'm communicating with Accuweather now. I was told it had been deployed but i'll double check.

This has been resolved. The section heading still says News and Video, but all videos have been filtered out.
