User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0 Build ID: 20130409194949 Steps to reproduce: Short version: When embedding XULRunner 10.0.4 in a Java SWT app, NVDA does not "speak" any of the page content when using the "up" and "down" arrow keys. Long version: The reproduction steps are complicated, and requires some setup. I detail below. Note that all steps are on a Windows machine (Windows XP or Windows 7) * Download XULRunner 10 to C:\sandbox\xulrunner_10_0_4: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/xulrunner/releases/10.0.4esr/runtimes/xulrunner-10.0.4esr.en-US.win32.zip * Download XULRunner 1.9.2 to C:\sandbox\xulrunner_1_9_2: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/xulrunner/releases/1.9.2rc1/runtimes/xulrunner-1.9.2.en-US.win32.zip * Download NVDA 2012.3.1: http://community.nvda-project.org/wiki/Download * Run NVDA * Run the Java code listed at the bottom. Note that this is based on the standard Browser snippet (http://git.eclipse.org/c/platform/eclipse.platform.swt.git/tree/examples/org.eclipse.swt.snippets/src/org/eclipse/swt/snippets/Snippet136.java) except for 2 changes: * XULRunnerPath is explicitly defined to use C:\sandbox\xulrunner_1_9_2 * MOZILLA is the specified browser * After the application launches, press Key Down. NVDA will say "This is line 2". Keep pressing Key Down. NVDA will read each successive line ("This is line 3". "This is line 4") * Change the code from C:\sandbox\xulrunner_1_9_2 to C:\sandbox\xulrunner_10_0_4 and run again * Press Key Down. NVDA will not say anything Other notes: * If running the Java snippet is problematic, you can try the same steps with a Java application: https://sourceforge.net/projects/xowa/ XOWA has a folder called C:\xowa\bin\windows\xulrunner. It comes with XULRunner 10.0.4. You can swap out XULRunner 10.0.4 with XULRunner 1.9.2 to confirm the above * Java / SWT apps are limited to version 10.0.4 of XULRunner and below as SWT does not support any XULRunner versions greater than 10.0.4 (http://eclipse.org/swt/faq.php#browserlinux) import org.eclipse.swt.SWT; import org.eclipse.swt.SWTError; import org.eclipse.swt.browser.Browser; import org.eclipse.swt.layout.FillLayout; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Display; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Event; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Listener; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.MessageBox; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Shell; public class Swt_demo { // http://git.eclipse.org/c/platform/eclipse.platform.swt.git/tree/examples/org.eclipse.swt.snippets/src/org/eclipse/swt/snippets/Snippet136.java public static void main(String[] args) { String html = "<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>HTML Test</TITLE></HEAD><BODY>"; for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) html += "<P>This is line "+i+"</P>"; html += "</BODY></HTML>"; System.setProperty("org.eclipse.swt.browser.XULRunnerPath", "C:\\sandbox\\xulrunner_1_9_2"); Display display = new Display(); Shell shell = new Shell(display); shell.setLayout(new FillLayout()); Browser browser; try { browser = new Browser(shell, SWT.MOZILLA); // changed from NONE } catch (SWTError e) { System.out.println("Could not instantiate Browser: " + e.getMessage()); display.dispose(); return; } browser.setText(html); shell.open(); while (!shell.isDisposed()) { if (!display.readAndDispatch()) display.sleep(); } display.dispose(); } } Actual results: NVDA is silent when using XULRunner 10.0.4. Note that it speaks the page content when using XULRunner 1.9.2 Expected results: NVDA should speak the page content when using XULRunner 10.0.4.
I'm pretty sure that version isn't supported, can you reproduce with esr 17 or more recent?
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately SWT limits Java apps to version 10.0.4 of XULRunner. SWT simply fails when pointing against the latest XUL Runner (esr 17 or latest). SWT version support is here: http://eclipse.org/swt/faq.php#browserlinux A forum post detailing the same: http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/mv/msg/377759/916855/#msg_916855 Considering that the functionality works in 1.9.2, but doesn't in 10.0.4, is there a way to confirm this is a known bug? If so, I can ask SWT about the likelihood of supporting ESR 17.
Bug filed against unsupported version; and JavaXPCOM is an unmaintained project as well.
