24.0a1 2013-05-15 win7 desktop today
23.0a1 2013-05-13 vista laptop on Saturday

sessionstore lost. about:sessionrestore is empty. sessionstore.bak also empty.
sessionstore.bak attached from today

in today's case, I shut down windows 7 with firefox running and windows open (maybe 50 tabs), let firefox close normally, rebooted to get windows updates, started same version firefox. Whammo. no session restore information

I don't think I've seen this since I reported it, and I don't know how to reproduce.
Does bug 883609 help this case where sessionstore.js empty, AND it's backup?

Yes, definitely. Among other things, bug 883609 takes considerable precautions to make sure that we don't overwrite sessionstore backups with corrupt files. There is still a remote chance that this can happen, due to a sequence of disk/OS/power failures, but it's several orders of magnitude less likely than it used to be.
