Good afternoon! I’m filing this bug to kick off updating http://www.mozilla.org/mission/ to include why we’re going mobile with Firefox OS and why it is important. This is a follow up to a conversation we had with John Slater. Updates will not be heavy: there will be simple text changes and a switch-out of the current video. Winston has already filed the creative request through smartsheet. Basic Timing: - Michaela to give submit (1) draft copy and (2) suggested Flicks video to feature to Matej by Thursday, 5/23. - Matej to (1) finalize copy and (2) submit to web dev by Thursday, 5/30. - Web dev to implement changes and ensure that updated site is live by Friday, 6/22 (or earlier). Important note: Currently, mozilla.org/mission is not localized. Updating the page in English is P1; however, my recommendation is to localize the page at least in Spanish and Polish as well, prior to the 6/22 go-live deadline. Let me know what I can do to help facilitate this. Jess mentioned that non-EN mission pages are not currently on bedrock. Thanks, Michaela
Hi Michaela- Thanks for filing this bug. I'll let Mike Alexis confirm the feasibility of a 6/22 live date and determine what will need to be done technically to have the localized pages on Bedrock. Regarding localization, we can add this to the localization queue. Pascal, our L10N manager, is back from his holidays on May 29 and can shed more light on the full queue for his team, but we will need to prioritize this below the localization of the main Fx OS site. Thanks, Jen

Hi Matej, Per the timeline in the initial post on this bug, here is draft copy for the mozilla.org/mission page update: https://yummy.etherpad.mozilla.org/26. Carmen and Winston added notes into the etherpad, which I've kept in, rather than directly incorporate, so that you can see where our thinking is. Thanks, Michaela
That etherpad won't let me in. Can you change the settings or something?
Hi Matej, I just shared the etherpad with you through email. However, the settings won't let me make it open to all. To make things easier, here is a Google doc with the copy + comments: https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/document/d/14wljQciI3HG6bjNUuA15oaRB0lPN7OXQgATig3eydF4/edit. Thanks, Michaela
Thanks, Michaela!. I prefer option 1, but I had a few ideas for ways to tweak it a bit: Mozilla is a proudly non-profit organization dedicated to keeping the power of the Web in people’s hands. That's why we developed Firefox OS, a smartphone operating system designed to give everyone a voice on the Web and help bring the next billion people online. Because the more we're connected, the further we can go. Let me know what you think. I also left a few other comments in the gdoc.
Thanks Matej I love the revised copy. I answered your Qs in the Google doc, and then left a for you / Jen: Will web dev still be able to move forward with the copy changes while we wait to see what Flicks videos come in? Want to make sure the site is live by 6/22 at the latest. Thanks, and I'm really happy with the copy! Michaela
Matej, is there anyone else who should review the updated copy? It feels weird to me to single out Firefox OS alone in that paragraph, especially since the bulk of people who see this can't get it yet. I thought we'd be working an OS mention into the existing copy.
+ Stormy and David Boswell to advise on who should review.

I think when you read it all together, it sounds less like it's just about Firefox OS, but maybe there's a way to make it clearer that it's just one example of the work we do. Here's everything together for context, along with a change to the main paragraph: We’re building a better Internet Our mission is to promote openness, innovation & opportunity on the Web. Mozilla is a proudly non-profit organization dedicated to keeping the power of the Web in people’s hands. It runs through everything we do, from our browser to Firefox OS, a smartphone operating system designed to give everyone a voice on the Web and help bring the next billion people online. Because the more we're connected, the further we can go. Read the Mozilla Manifesto to learn even more about the values and principles that guide the pursuit of our mission. I'm not sure who "owns" this page, but it would be a good idea to give someone at the Foundation a heads up that it's changing, especially if we're changing the email signup form to the Firefox & You newsletter.
As for who should review, maybe it makes more sense to think in RACI terms, who should be consulted and who should be informed?

Matej - I've set up time for Winston and Michaela to review the proposed changes with Erica S.
I approved the copy on the current version of the page, so I feel comfortable doing it again here. Matej, let me know how the meeting with Erica goes and then we can discuss any needed remaining edits. Sound ok?
Thanks, John. Sounds good to me.
In terms of informing, I suggest sending a heads up to the Governance list -- not to ask for feedback, but just to let people know it's changing. The Mission page, like the Manifesto page, is one of those foundational documents that is referenced often about why we make certain decisions and I think it would be useful to note this change there before it goes live.

Hi, All. Is there someone I could speak with about the request to change the newsletter sign-up? Thanks.
Hey all, Inserting myself a bit here on the email signup question, what's the reasoning for the change? A while ago, Jane, Winston, Ryan, and I had reached basic agreement on the idea that pages that are Firefox-focused would have the FF&You signup, pages that are generally Mozilla-focused would have our email signup, and then anything with its own newsletter (eg: the contributor newsletter signup on /contribute), would have its own newsletter signup. This page seems firmly in the general Mozilla bucket to me...I have no idea how many names this generates as compared to the main homepage signup, but I'd prefer it to remain as is if possible on that front. Thanks! ben
I think the newsletter can stay foundation centric. Primary purpose of the edit is to update the copy here to reflect the Firefox OS portion of our mission. The original logic for the change was we'll be pointing people to this page in some OS collateral.
Winston: Many thanks.
Hi all - urgency of this bug has been pushed down for owned media plans. We don't need it as a dependency for our programs for Firefox OS. Would still be great to update mission statement prior to launch, but not necessary for the programs we're pushing through on social and email marketing. We'll be able to link directly to the Firefox OS consumer page. Removing as a blocker.
Let's open a separate bug to update the Mission page based on the recent brand definition work.
