In order for this to happen, I launch mozilla and type the URL
(www.maccentral.com) without http://. The URL is then searched. If I select the
search URL and retype the URL again (without http://) it works properly.

One more thing... if you click on the location field before entering the URL
this bug does not happen. Also, sometimes, when you launch mozilla, the location
text area is not in focus and typing will do nothing. If this happens, you have
to click on the location field to enter and URL and the bug will not happen. You
might have to quit/launch mozilla multiple times before you can type in the URL
field without clicking on it first.

WFM on Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC; en-US; rv:0.9.2+) Gecko/20010716 the url
bar does not get focus if a start up page with a inputbox is loaded, wether you
put a url with or without http:// the url loads the page, no search started.
On the other hand the url bar always get the focus on startup when no page with
input boxes is loaded as startup page.

Reporter could you try a current build from:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/
and try out

I just downloaded the latest build and the problem is not happening anymore. I
am using build 2001072008 and the browser is set to open to a blank page. I also
set the browser to open mozilla.org when launched. The problem is not happening
with that setting either.
