Details

STR:
  - on google, search for hackernews (or github)
  - note that the first links are https:// links
  - click on link

-> get a page saying "the address isn't valid"

(this doesn't happen w/ http:// search results).

running latest OTA i got today; Boot2Gecko 1.0.1.0-prerelease; last updated 1/5/1980

Oooh, that's likely the problem -- the date is wrong.
(after tweaking the date, the symptom goes away, so I suppose this is a bug about error messages)
I think the date bug is a Keon thing, I had the same problem. The confusing error message is bug 769178 which is fixed in 1.1
