Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:21.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/21.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20130511120803 Steps to reproduce: The automatic upgrades crash as the user is not running as "root". Would you please add a feature that asks for the "root" password before trying to upgrade? And, not attempt to upgrade, unless the user is actually "root" or has been elevated to root.
Have you guys looks at the way Mac OS prompts for root password when installing a new package? Something similar would be great.
This affects Thunderbird too (17 on up). Also, /usr/bin/system-config-network prompts you for your root password. Maybe you could take a peek inside and see how they do it.

Take a look at the manual pages for polkit and pkexec ("man polkit" and "man pkexec"). These are the built in command in Linux to elevate
