881086 - Thunderbird hogs CPU when no network via WiFi (or otherwise)

Steps to reproduce:

An up to current version and preceding versions issue.
Start Thunderbird on laptop outside of a WiFi covered area to look up an address in an email.


Actual results:

Thunderbird hangs, hogs CPU 50% plus. System becomes unusable, unstable. Cannot shut down Thunderbird. Must reboot system.


Expected results:

Thunderbird should run and allow to view downloaded emails. Or at least release system resource and give option to switch to off line mode.

What types of accounts do you have setup? IMAP, POP, News, etc...

Correct. V 17.x prev. V16.x

Accounts are mostly IMAP with one POP. No news etc.

In any case TB should stop, switch to offline mode if there is no WiFi and not just hog all up until a system cold boot is required.

The message in question who content I was looking up was previously downloaded.

Just like FireFox can show it's previous loaded content when started w/o a WiFi connection and simply pops up a message "could not connect" if there is none.

This area of networking is known to not be totally robust. And Thunderbird does not change to offline mode when networking is gone.  but I've never seen this type of behavior. But I'm also running much newer version. 

Could you try the beta version from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ and tell us your results?

I'm running TB V 17.0.7.

I am able to replicate behavior the same on my desktop.
Try  disabling first any internet (network) connection.
Then start TB. It will hog with high CPU load an one cannot even
shut down TB unless in Task Manager "kill".

I encountered something like this in the past couple days. Tbird was too bogged down for me to collect a profile. I was using daily.

rcdorner, does this reproduce for you when using beta from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ ?

Haven't tried any beta yet. currently running TB V 17.0.7 issue unchanged from previous versions.

It is like bug 455936 but also hogs the CPu with a very high load. TB hangs and needs to be killed.

Just updated to TB 17.0.8, same problem. CPU 50 - 60%, TB unresponsive, need to kill.

OBSERVATION:

In my configuration TB uses about 125 - 175MB memory when all is working.
Starting TB w/o a inter/net connection the memory use gradually goes up to over  500MB (!) then drops about 100MB then goes up again. CPU load remains flat at around 50 - 60% and TB hangs unresponsive.
