found while testing fixes for bug 88066 [see test (9) under the win98 results there]. saw this using 2001.06.29.06-trunk comm bits on win98. i don't recall seeing this on mac or linux, but will double check. 1. go click on a file for which there is no system-defined helper app *and* no helper app defined within mozilla/n6.x. eg, i clicked a .bz2 file [mozilla source file from the nightly ftp site]. 2. the resulting helper app dialog should have "save to disk" selected, and "<no application specified>" next to the "open" radio button. click the "advanced" button. 3. in the resulting New Type dialog, enter a description and an application to launch the file [i used WinZip for the .bz2]. 4. click OK in the New Type dialog. expected: should be returned to the helper app dialog. but, if not that, then should start transferring the file [ie, get the download progress dialog] to open it up [although that might be presumptuous?]. actual result: the helper app dialog goes away. workaround: need to click the .bz2 link to bring it up again [it'll have the new, correct settings, though].

Currently on linux i just get a prompt to where to save the file. Not even the "no app" dialog. Perhaps the linux version has .bz2 built in because it's common in linux systems? Did see the no app dialog when downloading some .rpm files. Build 2001062814
sairuh, are you sure the helper app dialog went away? I wasn't able to reproduce that behavior. It does "look" like it went away because the underlying browser window gets focus. But the dialog is still there and I can toggle through the list of open mozilla windows until the dialog comes back to the front. Is that what you are seeing or is the dialog really going away for you? I couldn't trick it into doing that.
mscott, you're right: the dialog must've been underneath the other windows. i tried this again, and interestingly the helper app dialog stayed on top. ah well!
