After opening a new browser window, resizing it, and disabling the "My Sidebar"
and "Personal Toolbar" options using the View menu, none of these changes are
saved, even if the resized window is closed or the browser is quit.


Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open new browser window.
2. Resize, and change view preferences.
3. Close browser window.
4. Open new browser window.

Actual Results:  None of the changes made to the first browser window were
saved, the new browser window was the size of the original window when it was
first opened, IE a very small window in the top-left corner of the screen, with
half of its horizontal page-display space taken up by the toolbar.

Expected Results:  The new window should have opened with the size, location and
view settings that the first window was set to before it was closed.

This problem was also in the .91 build. As well, I tried deleting the Mozilla
and Netscape registries, and the Netscape Users folder in the System
Folder:Preferences folder, to make sure that it wasn't corrupted preferences of
some sort causing this, but the problem was still there after restarting the
browser.

I confirm this having occurred once in Mozilla 0.9.1 / Solaris.
It worked again after deleting the localstore.rdf file in the .mozilla directory
(unfortunately I did not keep a backup for further investigation)
I've confirmed in my setup that moving/deleting the localstore.rdf
 file from the /[startup drive]/Users/Shared
Documents/Mozilla/Users50/[username] folder does fix this behavior, so it must
be cause by entries in that file from old versions of Mozilla.

If someone is interested in analyzing this problem, I've archived a copy of my
localstore.rdf which was causing the problem, and can provide it if you e-mail me.

Today this occured to me again on 2001072910/Solaris. Taking a closer look at
the localstore.rdf I noticed that for some reason, Mozilla inserted a character
(0x11) between a link and </RDF:li>. Now Mozilla will complain:

This is a really annoying bug.  I'd like to see the window size and sidebar

I had asimilar problem with OSX 0.9.7 Build 200112106. I got rid of it by
removing my localstore.rdf file. Here is a copy of it.

localstore from comment 9, distilled (and the problem is just as described in
comment 8).
Mark's localstore.rdf from comment 12 ... I'm not sure what to make of that. It
doesn't look like a localstore.rdf file.

But I think we have enough to see the pattern. Looks like the urlbar history
serializer occasionally inserts bad data, and this confuses the RDF parser
thoroughly enough to break localstore persistence.
This problem has started happening on newer linux builds too, as of 2002012321
and  several earlier.  My linux settings (no sidebar, no personal bar, mail
summary columns, window size) are no longer persistent.
It seems that bug 99236 has been fixed, though no one's claiming credit. A
corrupt localstore.rdf is now just ignored and thrown away. Meaning, as far as
this bug goes, your window state will all be lost but at least it won't stay
lost. Reset it and it'll stick.

Fixing it in a friendlier way; losing just the one corrupt URL, for instance,
would be a lot nicer, of course. This is much harder because of the system's
modularity. We're just getting an error indication back from the XML parser:
"oops, malformed XML". This could reasonably be a(nother) enhancement bug: nicer
recovery from a partially corrupt localstore.
