Korean JOHAB encoding is an encoding to encode all 11,172 modern Hangul syllables as well as ~4800 Hanjas(Chinese characters) and ~1100 symbols (in KS X 1001) in 2byte-encoding-space (with MSB of the first byte set to 1). Because of the way Hangul syllables are encoded in JOHAB (use 5 bit-long bit pattern to represent Hangul consonants and vowels), algorithmic conversion is possible between Unicode and JOHAB as far as 11,172 Hangul syllable is concerned while for Hanja and symbols, table-look-up is necessary. This has been already included in intl/uconv/src/{uscan,ugen}.c to support Sun's ksc5601.1992-3 X11 font encoding. However, this does not include US-ASCII (which is a part of JOHAB encoding) so that it cannot be used for generic JOHAB encoding support. Also, for ksc5601.1992-3 font encoding, JOHAB-> Unicode converter is not necessary and has not been 'activated' (necessary lines in uscan.c is commented out ) (refer to bug 80111 and bug 71489). I've made a patch to support full-fledged JOHAB encoding support (in BOTH direction) and will attach it to meta-bug I'm going to file later today.
refer to bug 88944 for the patch and other related issues.
