Fizzilla consumes 90% CPU after typing in URL box

When Mozilla first starts, it consumes about 1-6% of the CPU when
completely idle on a 500 MHz G4. Once I click on the location bar and hit
the delete key to clear the field, Mozilla's CPU usage jumps to 90% and
stays there.
If I type in a URL such as slashdot.org and let it sit, the CPU stays pegged
at 90%. When I go back to www.google.com (which is my default home
page) and let it sit idle, the CPU still sits at 90%.
Unfortunately on my PowerBook G4, this causes the fan to go on and
generate terrible noise (damn fans) making Mozilla unsuitable for round
the clock usage.
