Was this supported in v1.0.1? Is this a certification blocker? As long as the user is getting emails there's no data loss and we'd ship with this.

Not supported in v1.0.1. The only way to get new e-mails is to manually cause sync to happen, at which point you can just see the new messages. In v1.1, however, there is also an affordance to expose a bar that tells you the number of new messages.
Periodic sync and notifications are a v1.2 feature, one of these user stories:
Bug 892519 - [User Story] Email Notifications - Email App Not Foreground
Bug 892521 - [User Story] Email Notifications - Email App Foreground
This should be duped to one of those or invalided out or something.
