When I read mail and news, it would be a advantage to be able to change the
layout with the list of folders/newsgroups, the list of messages and the preview
of the message. Especially when reading long messages, e.g. in programming
newsgroups with a lot of source code, I would like to be able to show the two
lists and the preview as three colums, instead of the horizontal tiling of the
message list and the preview window.
It is not very difficult for you to fix, but I (and other persons I know), would
be happy if it became an option in Mozilla/Netscape.

severity: enhancement.
You want something like this?
_________________________________
| Folders | message | preview |
| | list | |
---------------------------------
Why does this make newsgroups with lots of source code more readable?
Severity: normal → enhancement

Yes, that would be fine!

... makes [it] more readable ...
You can see more lines at the same time, especially since the news
postings usually are wrapped anyway...
Also, I noticed while I wrote this message, that when editing the
messages, the program wasn't able to copy spaces, it just deleted them.
Isn't that something of the point with plain text, that all characters,
spaces too, should be treated similar? Anyway, it was quite annoying...

Marking NEW.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Keywords: ui
Summary: additional layout for mail/news → [RFE] additional layout for mail/news
How about if there were six available layouts, like this:
---------- ---------- ----------
| | 2 | | 1 | 2 | | 1 | |
| 1 |----| or |--------| or |----| 3 |
| | 3 | | 3 | | 2 | |
---------- ---------- ----------
or
---------- ---------- ----------
| 1 | | | | | |___1____|
|--------| or |1 |2 |3 | or |___2____|
| 2 | 3 | | | | | | 3 |
---------- ---------- ----------
and a way to control which pane went where?

Kinda like what MicroPlanet Gravity does. Just a suggestion.
I'd like to see alternate layouts as well. My ideal would be the old Netscape 3
alternate layout:
---------
| 1 | |
----- 3 |
| 2 | |
---------
Am going to try to implement this myself as no one else seems to want to. Wish
me luck. Never done anything on a project this big before. :)

I would be happy to help with the implementation of this problem, but I have so
far failed to get Mozilla to build on my XP box. Yes, I could do development on
Linux, but it will complicate things for me a bit. If any of the interested
parties would like to cooperate on a solution, I'd be most grateful. Mozilla
could be a great mail/news client for me if we could just fix this.

For the proposed three-column layout, the message headers should be layouted
multi-line, maybe
---------------------
Author, Date, Time
Subject
Size, Spam-Flag
---------------------
(configurable)
Otherwise, there is probably not enough space for all the information needed.
But IMHO it is unnecessary to view the header of about 50 messages at a time, so
this would be a real enhancement.

This is an Outlook feature parity bug. Why don't we have a keyword for that?
Comment 15•17 years ago

Because a keyword for like three features would be slightly overacting? ;-)
