Auto-closing tab pane and auto-hiding awesome bar are extremely annoying

This report is for the tablet layout.
The new auto-hiding tab pane is extremely frustrating. Any taps outside of the tab pane close both the tab pane and awesome bar, meaning if you accidentally tapped, you need to swipe down (hard enough since the awesome bar isn't sensitive), press the tab box, and wait for it to animate in.
Opening a single new tab has turned from a one-click process (if the tab pane is already open, two if it isn't) into a multi-gesture and multi-tap process.
Opening multiple tabs (i.e.: you've just opened Firefox and you want to open a series of tabs) requires un-hiding the address bar, opening the tab pane, pressing the new tab button (which closes the tab pane), etc.
Clicking on a link and then interacting with the viewport in any way hides the awesome bar, meaning that there's no visual indication that the next page is loading. (IMO, the awesome bar should never be hidden while the browser is in the process of navigating between pages)
Please add a setting to disable auto-hiding all of the interface components. This has really made Firefox for Android frustrating to use.

While setting 'browser.chrome.dynamictoolbar' to False restores the previous functionality to the toolbar, the tab bar still autohides.

See bug 817728 that has been filed to allow the tab side-bar to be pinned.
I added an offer on FreedomSponsors for fixing this issue:
