This appears to be a deliberate misfeature.
To un-break it, try this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/keywordurl-hack/
Seriously though, this is a really annoying choice. The correct behaviour (which Fx has had for years) is this:
1. Typing a string containing no spaces into the location bar goes to that URL.
2. Typing a string containing spaces into the location bar, searches for that string (using keyword.URL; I have google)
3. Typing a string into the search bar searches the custom engine for that string; I usually have Wikipedia.
Having #2 and #3 do the same thing may be consistent, but it's really unhelpful, as we need to do more clicking to achieve the same result.
