I was just talking with gandalf, and he has been using our console extensively, but had no idea how to close the variables view. He was actually closing the whole webconsole, refreshing, and reopening the console just to close the variables view. I told him about ESC and his mind was blown. This is a very sad story. We should make sure that this doesn't continue for more of our users.
I agree, and we need this both in the webconsole and the Scratchpad.

Won't be fixed in VariableView, but added a note in Bug 1380501 so we don't do the same mistake there.
