Recently, a few folks at the Auckland office told stories of how they prefer to use instant search based on three anecdotes:
1) The phrase they use to describe a problem might not be the same as the phrase that the bug reporter would use, so their description of the bug is imprecise
2) Instant search gives better results for imprecise, incomplete or related terms, which, for folks who don’t remember what the bug is called, is better
3) The awesome bar is great for partial searches, but only if the bug page has already been visited before
Based on these, I thought that a more visible instant search will make a lot of users lives easier, and talked to glob about the possibility of doing so.
The two principles I followed are:
* Do not ever break simple search. Everybody is used to this method, and shouldn’t need to change their behavior to get what they’re already used to.
* Instant search works best to find something at a specific product level, but not to search across all products. Cross-product instant search may be possible in the future (is it more effective, though?), but to make this feature simpler to deploy, let’s not do it today.
Attached is a set of mockups that visualizes the instant search capability on the header navigation area. Explanations can be found in every page.
