tl;dr: Firefox OS *doesn't recognize incoming or outgoing calls/texts as matches against contacts in my address book* if the call/text has a leading "1" whereas the contact's record lacks a leading "1".
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Create a contact (in the US, for a phone number in the US), and leave off any initial "1" in the contact's phone number.
e.g. let's say this is MV MoCo office; use "650-903-0800" as the phone number.
2. Receive a text/call from that contact.
OR, alternately: Call or send a text to that contact, *but* type their number manually, *with an initial "1" on the number. e.g. 16509030800
EXPECTED RESULTS: The contact should be recognized and displayed with the contact's name.
ACTUAL RESULTS: The contact number is displayed, as if the call/text is from/to an unrecognized phone number.
In my case, my Firefox OS contact list is entirely synchronized from my Google contact list, where I don't have leading "1" on any of my contacts. This never caused problems for me on Android; but on Firefox OS, it means that my incoming calls/texts are all unrecognized.

For example -- let's say I have a contact whose 10-digit number is [NUMBER].
My "Messages" app shows all texts from that contact are displayed as having being sent from
+1[NUMBER]
and the Dialer app's call log shows incoming calls as having come from
1[NUMBER]
In other words, the contact is not matched/recognized. (unless I manually edit their info in the contacts app to add a leading "1" or "+1".)
Summary: Messages/calls from contacts aren't recognized in SMS/Dialer app, if contact's record in address book is missing initial "1" → Texts & calls from contacts are displayed as being from unrecognized number in SMS/Dialer app, if contact's record in address book is missing an initial 1
