Icons are a great way to convey functionality, but only when they are universal. In all other cases it's usually better to be explicit. Liz points out in this post that she wasn't aware of them, despite being a regular contributor: http://bookmaniac.org/steady-contribution-to-firefox-support-forums/

Instead of the hat, we should use a button that says "common responses"
Maybe in addition to the hat rather than "instead of". I can see the magic hat is loved by the community. It's playful and cool!
