After the work to use mozrunner and mozprocess in mochitest in bug 746243 is complete, we should make desktop reftest use those as well, instead of automation.py's Process abstraction.

I'm pretty sure that once you've done all the heavy lifting to get Mochitest working, Reftest should be able to leverage all of that. Reftest doesn't have any additional weird requirements on top of Mochitest. It doesn't run any servers from Python and it creates a simpler profile. It does need a lot of the other fiddly things like assertion stack fixing, hang checking and leak checking.
