More info on this issue can be found in bug 892518 specifically in comment 11, this is new feature implementation and this bug is opened specifically to discuss how "Setting email as default" should work.

This issue does not reproduce on 1.1, on comment 1 it specifies that this is a new feature being implemented for 1.2. On 1.1 newly added email accounts are automatically set as the default account.
Bug 892518 comment 11 suggests the user should be able to have an option to set an email account to default account or not during the set-up. The test case is unclear because in step 6 is says "After you entered the next page, set the following information. 1) Check for new messages="5 minutes" 2) Set as default e-mail = "True" 3) Display notifications for new messages="Enable"
If this option is not going to be implemented for 1.2, This test case will need to be edited to reflect the current design.

Per recent comment by UX in bug 1149922 comment 3 it's intentional that we no longer show an option to mark an account as the default. (We did, for some time, but we got rid of it again.) The associated moztrap case should be revised/deleted if it still exists.
