People
(Reporter: maurer+MozillaBugs, Unassigned)
Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/24.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130827141029
Steps to reproduce:
1.) Select alternate search engine for a special query (e.g. ebay or wikipedia)
2.) Type normal navigation query in awesomebar, rather than search bar.
Actual results:
Search occurred in the engine selected by the search bar rather than google or another generalized search engine
Expected results:
Search should have occurred in a configurable default search engine (keyword.URL appears to be ignored now...)

Keyword.url was removed by bug 738818 due to abuse by malicious Add-ons and the difficulty users had in resetting this. You can install extensions like https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/keyword-search/ to restore this functionality if you'd like.

Is there a reason to remove the feature entirely instead of write protecting the permission from extensions or adding a better user facing way of changing it?
It seems a bad idea to break useful functionality for normal users in order to help users already in a fundamentally broken state.
