+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #885599 +++
Via bug 885599 we got Windows 8.1 as preview releases. Our latest experience has been shown that we got lot of problems with that PR. Given that Windows 8.1 is already out for MSDN subscribers we would like to request the final release for our VMs. Hopefully it will fix all of the current issues.

Thinking more, it's not a wanted but a qa-automation-blocked bug. We would need this as replacement of the existing PR machines to get our tests running again. As of now it's impossible due to all of those crashes.

I am a bit reluctant to spin up all 6 VMs (licenses) for this.
Will first fire up 1 x86 and 1 x86-64 of the RTM.

ISOs/versions to use:
Windows 8.1 Pro N VL (x86)
Windows 8.1 Pro N VL (x64)

That sounds fine. 'N' here means that the ISO doesn't contain the Windows Media Player. We don't need that for our usage, so I would say lets go ahead with those ISO images. Thanks.

Following VMs are online:
Win_8.1RTM_x86 10.22.73.215
Win_8.1RTM_x86-64 10.22.73.201
Besides enabling rdp+setting password nothing else has been done. I can finish up the rest of the settings (from mana) tomorrow if you can't get to them. Once ready, we'll need to turn them into templates or create a snapshot so that we could then later see if the load issue occurs again.
Do keep in mind that if you reboot, possible that they may not come back up on the same IP.

IIRC The N version lacks WMF which is required to play H.264 video.

Oh, if that is really the case can this be installed later with additional packages downloaded separately from the Microsoft website? I hope so.

Adrian, my last question would be important for us. We will have video tests soon, and given that also Firefox Desktop will support the system-wide H.264 video codec, we definitely need that codec. I don't want to put work into configuring the VMs as long as we don't know that.

Adrian, I cannot connect to any of those boxes via IP address. I haven't been on those earlier, so have they gotten a new IP?

Please check again (same IPs).
As none of the regular settings are set, they went to sleep.
I quickly change the power settings option but nothing else has been change.

As it looks like I'm able to play H.264 videos with Firefox and another video app on Windows 8.1. But I still wonder what the differences are between the N version and the other ones.
Adrian, is there anything listed on MSDN for differences? I will continue in searching.

Ok, so I found the information here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/n-editions
The N editions of Windows 8 allow you to choose your own media player and software required to manage and play CDs, DVDs, and other digital media files. If you choose to use Windows Media Player 12, downloading it, along with related software, is free. Windows 8 N editions are available for customers who live in countries that are part of the European Economic Area, Croatia, and Switzerland.
Given that statement we will most likely not be able to use that version of Windows in our U.S. data center. To be on the safe side I would suggest that we really get the non-N version installed on our VMs.

If Microsoft's schedule holds true they will be releasing Final to the public next week by mid-week. Anything that can be done to bump priority of this would be appreciated.

There was Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro. I went with Pro being that most of the current running VMs use Pro as well. If this needs to be changed, please let me know.
The to be templates are currently up in the following IPs:
Win_8.1RTM_x86 10.22.73.227
Win_8.1RTM_x86-64 10.22.73.230
Besides adding the mozauto user, changing the power options, installing vmware-tools, and enabling remote desktop, nothing else has been done.
Please let me know when ok to convert to templates.

Thanks Andrian. I think using Pro was the right decision. I will setup those machines today so we can create new 8 VMs hopefully later today.

Adrian, both VMs have been setup and fully tested. It has taken a bit longer because the 64 bit machine got crazy and reported more than 60 test failures. Finally I found out that I simply missed to set the bypass proxy for local sites setting. With that activated both machines are working fine now.
Please convert it back to a template and re-use (and create) the following nodes:
mm-win-81-32-1
mm-win-81-32-2
mm-win-81-32-3
mm-win-81-32-4 (new)
mm-win-81-64-1
mm-win-81-64-2
mm-win-81-64-3
mm-win-81-64-4 (new)
You can safely kill the old Win8.1 VMs. We don't need them anytime longer. Thanks!

Adrian, can we please get those VMs ASAP? There are only 2 days left until Win8.1 will be released and haven't run any tests since we had to stop testing due to crashes and performance reasons. Thanks!

Apologies for delay... busy.
The requested VMs are online.
You may eventually get some warning on activation as technically not all the VMs are properly licensed. For that, I submitted service now request;
https://mozilla.service-now.com/nav_to.do?uri=com.glideapp.servicecatalog_checkout_view.do?sysparm_sys_id=dbb8d30844641940151826f6aa42742d
Leaving bug open until new licenses are applied (8.1 Preview didn't require licenses...).
I also updated https://mana.mozilla.org/wiki/display/websites/QA+Automation+ESX+Service to add the new two VMs.

Still awaiting 32 bit licenses.

Looks like I have to update ClassicShell on all of those machines to 4.0, because we do not skip the start screen and lower versions don't really support 8.1.

Ok, all done and every machine has been connected to Jenkins now. Anthony, if you want you can trigger a couple of ondemand functional and update tests on those. Lets see how that performs.
Otherwise we will keep this bug open until the remaining licenses have been arrived.

Seemed to work well. I had no problems with functional and update ondemand testruns.

That's really great to hear. Looks like they really got those crashes fixed. So lets get them activated later this week by https://github.com/mozilla/mozmill-ci/issues/327

Windows 8.1 Pro 32 bit licenses applied.
I guess when time provides, file a separate bug to update the templates if needed.
