With Windows 8.1 (Firefox desktop mode), while playing windowless Flash video, Firefox frequently stalls, causing flash playback to also stall. During this time, Firefox chrome is also very unresponsive. I especially notice this with videos at http://www.ctvnews.ca/video. The issue was not present in Windows 8. STR: 1. visit http://www.ctvnews.ca/video 2. wait for the ad to finish playing 3. observe playback issues of main video 4. Compare with performance in Window 7/8 I have no issues on the same Windows 8.1 system with either Chrome or IE. There is also no difference between Flash 11.8 and 11.9 Windowed flash videos, such as those on Youtube, do not exhibit this issue.

To confirm that this issue is related to IPC, I downloaded the April 1, 2012 nightly (since I don't think current builds can actually disable IPC) and compared playback of Vimeo HD videos with IPC enabled and disabled. With IPC disabled, the video played better, but with IPC disabled, the video stalled. To confirm that this is not due to some compatibility issue with my display drivers and the flash plugin, I installed Opera 12.16 and can confirm that Opera is not affected. Thus, there is a major performance issue with Firefox itself.

Turns out this is primarily an Adobe Flash Player protected mode issue. While my testing reveals there's still significant performance issues with IPC, disabling Flash Player protected mode resolved the stalls.
