In short : old profiles can't be made to open pdf files in the internal firefox pdf viewer (via Ctrl+O for instance) - or apparently in any pdf viewer
Deleting mimetypes.rdf corrects this
There should be a one time update of the mimetypes.rdf in next FF correcting this
Detailed info is provided in this answer : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/961938#answer-446265

Can you post a copy of your working .rdf so we can diff it?

Don't have a working one - please read the answer I linked to above : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/961938#answer-446265 and the whole discussion for more info.
The way to get a clean rdf is delete the old one and let FF recreate it - but the guy that posted this answer actually went through the rdf and tried to fix it manually - read his answer

This is still a major annoyance in latest (27.1)
Steps to reproduce :
Copy the mimeTypes.rdf attached to your profile
Hit Ctrl+O in FF
Browse to a pdf file and select it
Result: firefox launches the download dialog
Expected result: FF should display the pdf in its viewer in a new tab
The suggested workatround - Deleting mimetypes.rdf corrects this - DOES NOT work for me (it just kills the ability of FF to open the pdfs in its viewer even when from the web (as oposed to my filesystem))
Do you need more info ?
