[marking as UNCONFIRMED... I simply cannot find the code where the NS4.x profile get's "locked"... :-) ] Profile migration code should check whether there is an application running which still uses the data to migrate (into the Mozilla5 profile format). For example, a running netscape 4.x communicator "locks" it's profile data in ~/.netscape via ~/.netscape/lock softlink. If such a thing is present the profile migration code should request user to close the NS4.x instance first before reading those data, otherwise data corruption may occur (e.g. profile migration reads possible stale data). The same problem applies to other profile migration code (eudora etc.) ...

Well, you have to check for locks exactly how NS4.x does it...
