Matt, I recall talking about this with you. Do you have any idea how hard a fix this is?

This was one of the tradeoffs from the LWT approach (see bug 813786 comment 44) accepted from the beginning. I don't know of a way to fix this while still covering the border of the selected tab in the default case.
