In windows, the new nightly + australis seems to have a reasonably significant amount of wasted vertical space the tab (and hidden menu options that are revealed with "alt") area.
Currently look: http://i.imgur.com/ctDpOOd.png
Expected from the "we maximised vertical space" claim: http://i.imgur.com/5hTFATE.png
This is on windows 7, I expect the same holds for Win8 in desktop mode but I only have win7 machines to test on.

This is because we need to leave space for the user to drag the window. Funnily enough, other people are complaing we don't leave *enough* space to do this.

The same issue on Windows XP. There is too many wasted space of address bar + favorites menu in 28.0a1 version comparing to 25.0. Also there is no longer option to use "small icons" to have smaller [back] button. It is big step back especially considering todays 16:9 screens lacking vertical space. You have made it even worse :-/
See the attached screenshot.

Wasted space comparison
Hello,
Lets keep this bug about the space above tabs in restored Windows.

Bug 863299 removed small icons mode and that's a separate issue than the main point of this bug. One issue per bug please.
I agree it looks like there is too much space between the nav-bar and bookmark bar. Please file a separate bug for this after confirming it's not caused by a tall extension button on one of the toolbars: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Firefox&blocked=australis-merge

P2 to at least figure out what to do here. Stephen, do you think there is anything we can do to deal with this without breaking the dragging usecase?

No, we want to maintain drag area and even the current amount is proving to be too small for some people.
