Proposed in paragraph 2 of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=886606#c0 (which I am now resolving fixed for its core bug) proposed that it would be good to avoid getting into infinite "hey! that's a new message, let's sync it! oh no, I failed to sync that message, let's pretend it didn't happen, but uh oh, I forgot to make a note that the message is bad! repeat." We emergently get some of this for free. In IMAP, things may just fall out of our synced time range after a time. For ActiveSync we don't actually hear about new messages more than once, although the modifications to them may freak us out a little. For POP3 this is potentially more serious.
