User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20131129053350 Steps to reproduce: I tried to open www.pjrc.com/teensy/K20P64M50SF0RM.pdf (or any other pdf). Actual results: The save/open dialog box appears. Expected results: The pdf should have been displayed in the built in viewer. This happens in safe mode as well, but not with a fresh profile. What might be the cause of this?
One odd thing is that my secondary profile (which I almost never use) is affected as well, and that it happens in both current Nightly (2013-11-29) and in release Firefox (25.0.1).

This PDF is pretty heavy (1227 pages) so, I guess on some low machines, Firefox fails to display it and offers only to download it.

Well, that might be true but it's not what happens here. As I said it works fine with a fresh profile, and it's also independent of pdf-file (same behaviour with e.g. http://www.rosamondgiffordzoo.org/assets/uploads/animals/pdf/RedPanda.pdf).
Perf of the PDF viewer can be affected heavily if you have disabled HWA in your current profile. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/forum-response-disable-hardware-acceleration Is it the case?
HWA is enabled. I don't think this is a perf problem.
Seems fine for me. Check your Tools->Options->Applications for the pdf mimetype and make sure it points to "Preview in Firefox." You may want to try wiping out your mimetypes.rdf file.

Thank you! That was it. Somehow that preference had been changed.
