User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.9; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20131112160018
Steps to reproduce:
I updated my S4 from Android 4.2.2 to 4.3 (both official Samsung images).
Actual results:
Verdana became the default display font instead of Open Sans. Ugly!
Expected results:
Open Sans should have stayed the default. I have not changed the default font order for anything in about:config. Open Sans displays in reader mode without any problems, so the font files seem to be there...

In bug 877203, we replaced Open Sans with Clear Sans. Can you try out Nightly (http://nightly.mozilla.org) or Aurora (http://aurora.mozilla.org) and reply back if you see Clear Sans font used?
nightly does not load any websites and aurora has the same bug, so no...
oh, side note: clear sans displays in reader mode, just not as the default font on websites.

Oh .. yes, apologies, today's Nightly is busted. How about Aurora?
oh sorry, i meant aurora has the same bug as the current stable, except that it does display clear sans in reader mode.

Would you mind posting a screenshot of a page displaying Verdana?
screenshot of phoronix.com with the default diaplay font being verdana

Thanks, that definitely looks like Verdana.

Revisiting this bug this evening on my Samsung Galaxy SIV (Android 4.4) I have with me. Phoronix in the example URL defines their own custom stylesheet styling with font-family:
Example:
div#phxcms_content_phx {
font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
}
On my Galaxy Note II (4.1.2) and HTC One (4.4) device I am seeing the exact same content.
Comparing the screenshot with actual fonts with some text (not styled) which is what we ship you can try the following to see some plain text:
Type this in your browser to see the actual fonts we ship: data:text/plain,"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog".

The plaintext thing shows me Droid Mono. Do you have access to a stock 4.3 Touchwiz S4? I just noticed that lwn.net shows Open Sans, it doesn't specify any font-stack. So maybe when a site specifies a local font-stack (no @font-face), it will take Verdana. Strange.

Still happening with 4.4.2 stock in FF 27. I partially solved the problem for me by setting browser.display.use_document_fonts = 0 ;) This also seems to be the standard setting on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I tried out yesterday.
