In a new website (first time opened in FF) and in a text input box, the language for the spell check is not set, as a result the spell check does not work. You've to set it manually for the 1st time using the context menu > Languages.

This has to be done only once for the website, FF remembers the preference thereafter.

Apparently there's no way to set the default language.
Hi,

I can confirm that you have to turn on the "Check Spelling" option in the context menu in order to activate it, on a fresh install. This is still happening on latest Nightly 32.0a1 (2014-05-29) on Debian x86_64.

On this article (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-use-firefox-spell-checker) it's said that the spellchecker it's on by default ("By default, Firefox is configured to automatically check spelling").
Is this still accurate? In that case, this is definitely a bug.

Changed the summary as well, to better reflect the issue.

Let me know if you need more information.

Which websites have you seen this on? Can you please try <http://www-archive.mozilla.org/editor/midasdemo/>?
Ok, I checked again and I realized that I tested it only on a one-line text box. That was very dumb of me, as I *even* had read it that it works only on text boxes *with more than one line*.

Working fine here, and in all more-than-one-line text boxes I tried.
I do apologise for a sloppy testing: sorry for the noise!

Reporter: is that the same issue you had? And can you try it with a more recent build? For instance, you can find here the latest Nightly → http://nightly.mozilla.org/

Also: is this happening in Safe Mode as well? (Help → Restart with Add-ons disabled)

Cheers,
Francesca

ps: moving this again from New to Unco, for my part could be close as Invalid, but I'd like to have more info from the reporter, to be on the safe side.
