We haven't updated this since we updated our nav and refined our focus to mentors.

Let's update.
:erika - just needinfo me when the email is done and I can update it
@ Amira: assigning to you. Can you review the draft above?

* Feel free to edit / re-write / add to make it your voice -- it comes from you, after all.

* Would be good to get your take on whether the welcome email text answers the most frequently asked questions you're already getting from new users.
We should also file another bug to make the emails attractive.
Assigned to Amira (it was still assigned to me).

Hey gang. Added myself to the cc list on this bug and will review the draft asap. I'm thinking of taking an informal approach with only a couple links available. Main thing we learned with MP emails is when you hyperlink too many things the less clicks you will get on any.
Given some thought and revisions to the text (as well as gotten a few email-expert eyes on it). https://mofocomms.etherpad.mozilla.org/webmaker-signup-email

Matt - give it a look at let me know what you think.
Thanks for doing this Amira! Love it! Can't substantively review until Monday, but here's some quick responses:

* Not sure if pointing people at the 3 tools are the right 3 main CTAs. Don't have a proposal for better ones right this minute -- but want us to think about that logic. Just going with the links in your first graph might be better as main CTAs.

* Let's have you bring and test this in next Cross Team call. So we can also talk about how we want to do metrics on these. To A/B test and see how changes in how these are written impact results, etc.

* The mail could be even shorter and breezier. I love that this is short, from *you*, and written in your voice. I'd encourage experimenting with cranking that up even further. You could even try writing a real one of these to a real friend -- and see what comes back? :)
Question Jbuck: do we have the ability to do A/B testing on these Webmaker welcome mails? And are we collecting metrics on open rates, click-throughs, etc. right now?

No on both counts

K thanks jbuck
Thanks for feedback Matt. I can do another iteration before the next cross-team call and see where we end up. The three tools had been listed for a couple reasons 1) when you land on the site it's a bit unclear to some users what the tools do and 2) most people don't know what to do or where to do so I assumed background on the tools and specifically calling out makes they can remix is a clear start. Andrea suggested something like this:

You can get started making things right now. If you're thinking:
"I'm new to this, but willing to try something easy to start" try X-Ray Goggles.
"I've got basic skills, hit me with something a little harder, but fun" try Popcorn Maker.
"I'm looking for a real challenge. I've made stuff on the web before" check out Thimble, or better yet, dig deeper and try our tools and starter projects.

Open to diving deeper in the call and doing more testing.
* Agree -- most potential users don't know where to go or what to do. You're right that's the main thing this mail should solve for.

* I like this approach:
"I'm new to this, but willing to try something easy to start" --> try X-Ray Goggles
"I've got basic skills, hit me with something a little harder, but fun" --> try Popcorn Maker
"I'm looking for a real challenge. I've made stuff on the web before" check out --> try Thimble, or better yet, dig deeper into our starter projects.

* Next question would be: what's the best landing page for each of those? which do users find easier -- being sent to the *tool* landing pages? Or is it better to send them to a starter make for each of those three things? Like the ones featured on the Webmaker.org front page right now?
@ Michelle:

*Amira's comments and draft is also great analysis on the kinds of challenges we need to solve for as we tackle the "User" and "Supporter" parts of the engagement ladder next week:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Webmaker/Get_Involved

* The "User" piece needs to list out the initial steps and psychology Amira describes. What are the *first* CTAs and steps? In ways that help people around the "I don't know how to get started" problem?

* Once we've completed the "Contributor" piece + metrics, this seems like what we should really sink our teeth into next
@Matt: added a reminder to consider Amira's analysis in the user section of the ladder. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Webmaker/Get_Involved#Users

Hey gang. Just noticed from some community response emails that the welcome to webmaker email was never updated with our text. Should I file a new bug or can someone here update it. https://mofocomms.etherpad.mozilla.org/webmaker-signup-email --text at top of pad
Flags: needinfo?(jbuck)
Hey Amira, the welcome email was updated as of march 10th in bug 976263, check it out: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4403845/Screenshots/el.png

So strange. A recent email came back with the old text. I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I see it again.
* Jbuck: can we test to ensure correct mail is in fact going out?
Component: webmaker.org → Engagement Ladder
Flags: needinfo?(jbuck)
Yeah, just create a new account. I've created a bunch of mofostaging, and the correct email has gone out for me.
