Build Date & Platform Found: Mac Seamonkey commercial build 1999070810 installed on PPC 9600/300 OS 8.5.1 Overview Description: Double clicking on the server icon to expand folder/newsgroup list is slower than M7. Running on a 300 mhz machine with 144MB of ram, I literally have to wait after a double click to before I see my POP, IMAP, or Newsgroups. Sorry, I don't have number to tell how slow. It behaves slow enough to give the user the impression that his double click did not happen. There were many times were you double click again then eventually it expands but it collapses again b/c I mistakely double clicked again. Another example, after you have expanded the mail folder (IMAP/POP), there is a long delay when you click on the Inbox folder before it will highlight the Inbox folder and display messages in the Thread pane. Steps to reproduce: 1) Start Apprunner 2) Launch Messenger using the Task or Component bar 3) Double click on the POP/IMAP server icon to expand the folder list 4) Wait. Notice how long before it takes to display your mail folders 5) Select a folder (such as the Inbox that contains <20 messages) 6) Wait. Notice how long before it takes before the Inbox is highlighted and messages show up in the Thread pane. Actual Results: A noticable delay before the folder are displayed or selecting a folder to display its contents Expected results: It should not be worst than Communicator 4.x Additional Information: (Personal note: my 300 mhz PPC feels like a 100 mhz)

Actually, I would expect it to be worse than 4.x ....! On the other hand, showing messages in the thread pane should be a lot faster. Try it with more than 20 messages, there should be a noticeable difference. reassigning to me.
I now have over 60 messages in my POP Inbox. I don't see that much of a speed improvement. When I initially select the Inbox, there is still a noticable pause before messages will display and the messages slowly populate. I can see the scoll bar moving to indicate more messages being added. Personally, I like to keep as few messages in my Inbox as I can.
fyi - under IMAP, the performance is noticeably better displaying messages in the thread pane. There is still a problem with performance under IMAP trying select another folder. There is a pause after you click on another folder before it highlight the folder.

fyi Comparing the performance on my windows machine Gateway P200 with 64MB running Win98 vs. my PPC 9600/300 with 144MB (vm off) in recents M8 optimized build, I can say my windows machine run apprunner faster than my PPC. It's very painful to test apprunner on the Mac. Do you think we could bump the priority up and maybe set the target milstone to M9? I believe Mac users will get frustrated. (Personally, I would wait until this issue is resolved before using it at home).

I can't do anything about the speed until some changes from RDF happen. Those changes are scheduled to happen in M10, although there is a possibility they could happen earlier.
Thank you Scott for the explaination. It helps me understand why.

I should point out that I'm not sure why it would be worse than M7. I did add a couple of more columns which might be making the difference. I don't suppose you have any data showing the speed difference between M7 and M8? I'd be curious as to how far apart they are.
Scott, I compared using POP using the M7 (6-21-15-M7) with yesterday M8 (7-14-16-M8) commercial builds. I used a stop watch to time my numbers. Under M8, the time would vary expanding and collapsing the list of folder but the time always took at list 20 seconds. Under M7 To expand the list of pop folders, it took 1-2 seconds To select and display the pop inbox containing 31 messages, it took 1-2 seconds To collapse the list of pop folders, it took 1-2 seconds Under M8, To expand the list of pop folders, it took 27-47 seconds To select and display the pop inbox containing 31 messages, it took 10-12 seconds To collapse the list of pop folders, it took over 60 seconds at times. You are more than welcome to stop by and use my PPC. Ninoschka has a similar machine that displays this performance problem. It's very painful to test on the Mac.
Summary: [Perf] Mac - display folder list and folder contents is worst than M7 → [PP] Mac - display folder list and folder contents is worst than M7

Sounds like this needs to be fixed for PR1, so I added a note to the Status Whiteboard
