Instead the splash screen or the start screen I get a black screen (see screenshot, right monitor). No response, nada. Fresh build of m-c tip, no patches.

did another pull&build. It does start now, but I get a black screen for a second or two and then the start ui. No splash screen...

I also tried -metrodesktop at mbrubeck's request. It starts metrofx is a blank white screen and windows pops up a 'Nightly has stopped working' message.
I also lose all my tabs from last time. >.<

try rebooting? sounds like your splash screen image cache got trashed.
