Steps to reproduce:

Both 'Import bookmarks from .HTML' and 'Restore Bookmark from .JSON' feature freezes the browser when using a large bookmark backup file. HTML file is 15mb and JSON file is 9mb, with over at least 4000 bookmarks - categorized into folders, tagged.


Actual results:

Firefox wasn't able to finish the process even after an hour. Firefox froze/hanged and kept on consuming memory. I had to force close the program every time.


Expected results:

Even with large bookmark, there shouldn't be problem importing/restoring bookmarks into Firefox.

I am using Firefox/38.0.5 and I am having the same problem with a bookmark html of size 13Mb. 

The browser stops responding for a very long time, I had to kill the proccess. I tried it 2 or 3 more times, same thing happened, in the end it does load the html bookmark file but firefox starts freezing the whole computer when I work on it for 5-15 min. 
This has been happening to my PC for the last 2 weeks only when using firefox after loading a 13MB bookmarks html file, all other programs including chrome never freeze my computer.

Should I create a new bug report?

No I think it's fine to have it here.
Just to be sure, do you have add-ons handling or syncing bookmarks in that profile that could slowdown the import?

No I don' have any add-ons, as I have recently reinstalled firefox, plus deleted my profile file for firefox too, I only have no-script add-on but I am sure that has nothing to do with the problem. 
I am starting to suspect the firefox started freezing my computer only after firefox started using the new web-based configuration (settings) menus. because the freezing started around 2-3 weeks ago. I tested my computer for all other problems, I found nothing. The only program that freezing my computer is firefox. The last time I installed firefox my computer froze right after installation, I was resetting my setting options.

I have the Problem with:
Firefox 43.0.4 EME-free
Win 10 64 Bit and a
1,83 MB bookmark backup file from another PC (same FF version, Win 8.1 64 Bit)

No, I think it should be normal, "some loss of functionality under specific circumstances", the works fine for regular size.

Bookmarks import has been made asynchronous, so this should be improved now. See dependencies of bug 1320534 for that.

Also for general performance improvements to importing, we're looking at those in bug 1320534. So I think I'm going to dupe this forward to that, as that is where all the work is going on at the moment.
