If we can't fix the underlying issue, maybe there is a way to detect this slowness and offer the user some options.

Maybe there's something in there to make the issue more reproducible (didn't have time to read through it yet).

This lacks a testcase. And using Firefox on Mac for the past couple years, I can't say I've seen a general slowing over time with many tabs.
