Right now it's possible to add completely wrong nicknames in the "Add buddy" dialog and similar for new accounts on the account wizard as well.

Suggestion: add a way to tell whether a nickname is valid on a certain protocol or not. Maybe by requiring another method on protocol extensions that returns whether a passed string is a valid nickname or not.

My suggestion is to keep the "Add buddy" dialog open until either the user clicks cancel, or the buddy name is accepted by the server. If the user attempts to add a buddy that is rejected, the dialog could be updated to show a message (for example, "The buddy could not be added because [reason]"), with the response from the server.

This would possibly also be useful for a purpleIPref of the string type (which should essentially be the same as the nicknames/usernames?) (To allow for validation of any string preference, i.e. server/hostname, channel names, etc.)

This doesn't block my JS-IRC work, it would just be nice to have.

Duping to bug 1176115 since that has a patch.
