Setting custom icons for contacts would be nice e.g. for users that don't have set one themselves or to replace one with another that fits better when scaled to smaller sizes or only to replace something inappropriate. It would also be great for chat rooms that have no 'user icon' in general.

This would be the graphical equivalent to changing a contact's displayname.

The MUC part of this depends on bug 954277 (bio 844) (where I also allude to this idea).

Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
