Sometimes when dragging buddy1 into buddy2 to create a contact list, the name of buddy1 changes to buddy2. Then the contact list just contains two buddies with the same name (but a different protocol icon if it's a different chat list). This is especially confusing if you accidentally drop a buddy into the wrong list. Maybe this has something to do with the process of changing the name of the buddy in a different tag? tag1 -buddy1 tag2 -buddy2 Drag buddy1 to buddy2 and you get: tag1 -buddy2 ...buddy2 ...buddy1 with the name of buddy2 tag2 -buddy2 ...buddy2 ...buddy1 with the name of buddy2

You're combining the two buddies, but they're in different tags, so the contact appears under both tags. If you wish it to appear only under one tag, then you can Right click > "Tags..." > uncheck the ones you don't want. Note that some protocols/servers don't abide by you changing tags, so when you restart Instantbird they'll go back to where they were (Facebook is a big culprit of this btw). Let me know if this sounds like what is happening (I might have misunderstood your report though!). :)

*** Original post on bio 910 by patrickjdempsey <pjdkrunkt AT lycos.com> at 2011-07-10 22:21:45 UTC *** Yes, I understand that buddy1 will be *replaced* with buddy2 in tag1, the problem is that under the contact list for buddy2, there are now two identical buddy names. Detaching buddy1 from buddy2 list does not cause the name to correct, I have to manually change it. (Thank goodness when it happened my buddy was using an avatar image, otherwise it would have been impossible to sort out). As I said, this doesn't always happen.
*** Original post on bio 910 at 2013-03-26 14:52:02 UTC *** So my understanding of what is happening here is that after combining the buddies, the alias is reset for all the buddies that are combined into a contact, and they keep that alias even after being split. Does that sound like what is happening? I think that this is the intended behavior, but I'm not sure.
