*** Original post on bio 913 by patrickjdempsey <pjdkrunkt AT lycos.com> at 2011-07-10 21:51:00 UTC *** When dragging a buddy into a contact list, the only visible action is the disappearance of the first buddy from the list. If a user accidentally drags a buddy into a contact list they don't mean to, it's very difficult to figure out where it got dropped. The contact list should automatically expand when a buddy is dragged in to prevent that possible confusion.

*** Original post on bio 913 at 2011-07-10 22:04:05 UTC *** I think the interaction I would like is: - while dragging, if staying for more than some time (half a second?) above a contact, expand it with a nice animation. - show the dragged buddy where it would end-up but maybe partially transparent (= preview of what would happen). If the buddy is dropped before the expand animation finishes or if no preview is drawn, the action is canceled. Immediately after a successful merge, the contact should be expanded. I'm not sure if it should collapse itself as soon as another contact is selected or stay expanded until the user collapses it by hand. Note: all of this requires a lot of work and is unlikely to be a priority soon. It's nice to have this bug filed to discuss and remember what would be the idea thing to do if we had an infinite time to implement it. Thanks for filing!

On the behalf of Florian: Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
