This bug assumes landing of bug 954348 (bio 915). In Firefox, the dragging interface for tabs has several visual clues of the action. Dragging a tab through the tab strip shows a little arrow, dragging it to the bookmarks bar or menu shows an insertion marker that lets us know what's going to happen and where. When dragging a buddy, it would be nice to have a similar visual indicator that lets us know that dragging over a buddy name is going to add it to the contact list, or dragging it over a tag name is going to move it to that tag group (bug 954348 (bio 915)). I could see the target buddy name or tag name being highlighted (a border around it?) or maybe display a "+" icon where the "chat" or "X" icon normally appears on hover.

Alternatively, you could use an info popup with the text "Add buddy to ____ contact list" or "Add buddy to _____ tag".

While I may not fully agree with the request in bug 954348 (bio 915), I agree here that we need better visual feedback of what will happen if something is dropped.
See bug 953729 (bio 286) for a discussion of more possible drag actions we may want to add.

On the behalf of Florian:
Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
